Rigassificatore, Legambiente: “Dear Mr. Blair, we understand, but...”



Il Circolo Legambiente Tonino Di Giulio ha inviato una lettera in inglese al Primo Ministro britannico Tony Blair in cui si ribadiscono le ragioni del No alla costruzione di un impianto di rigassificazione all’entrata del porto di Brindisi.

Dear Mr. Blair
We understand your care about the difficulties encountered by British Gas in constructing his plant in Brindisi, but You also have to understand our worry concerning such a plant.
It would be located in the mouth of the harbour, quite near (too near) to other dangerous chemical plants, and close to the city. Moreover, its location precludes all other sea activities when the ships carriyng the LNG come in and out the port.

We have another idea about the economical progress of our land, and the LNG plant is not included in that idea. What about a similar plant on the Thames, near Westminster or London Bridge? Would You like it? No, I believe You don’t!

You say that there are all the regular authorizations. False! The last Major (now sentenced for corruption) gave his authorization without informing the City Council and the population, and without warrant. The plant has not been submitted at procedure of valuation of environmental impact (in italian VIA) and there are some “dark points” in the whole proceeding. The Magistracy is inquiring into it. Therefore the BG has some almost irregular authorizations, but it continues stubbornly to work on the preliminary platform.

Mr. Blair, when we go into other people’s house, we knock at the door and ask: may I come in? BG did not behave like that. BG has come into our town, has thrown open the door, sat on the chair and said: the plant will be made in the harbor. Stop.

You see, Brindisi is not the India or Egypt or Sudan of last century. We are not depending upon the British Empire, therefore don’t ask Mr. Prodi about our disappointment concerning the LNG plant. For us it is even a matter of self-respect, do You agree?
